News feeds from the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities

What are news feeds?

News feeds allow you to see when a website of your choice has added new content.

This means that when this website adds new content to their site, it will immediately be fed onto your browser or website.

The advantages of feeding our new content are:

  • it allows more people to find out about the work of the Foundation

  • it enhances the content of the other website

News feeds often appear as the abbreviation RSS. This is generally understood as 'Really Simple Syndication'.

People do not actually read the RSS as it is written in a XML code. Computers can read XML code and show it on the screen in a way that people can read.

How do I get news feeds?

You will need a news reader. This is a piece of software that allows the RSS code to be read and then viewed on your screen.

There are many different versions of news reader, with new ones appearing all the time. Some can be accessed using a browser and others are downloadable.

Browser-based news readers

These news readers allow you to see your chosen news feeds from any computer.

Downloadable news readers

These stay on your main computer, in the same way that you may download your e-mail from a certain computer using Outlook.

Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.

Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit a website and display an icon when they find one.

Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive.

For example, if you would like the latest Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities press releases, you just need to click on the orange RSS icon on the Media Page.

If you click on the button you can subscribe to the feed in 2 ways:

  • dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader

  • cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader
