Building Community Networks A conference to promote inclusion in the community for people with learning disabilities

News Release, 19 October 2005

On Wednesday 30 November, the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities is to host a conference about creating opportunities in the community for people with learning disabilities. Research by the charity highlights that people with learning disabilities want the chance to live as ordinary citizens but in reality, are more likely to spend their time in day centres and special services.

The conference, Building Community Networks: An International Perspective on Best Practice, will include guest speakers from America and Australia who will talk about the lessons learnt and progress made in their countries. Examples of good practice from the UK will be shared, and there will be an opportunity for delegates to discuss in workshops how communities can be helped to be more receptive to people with learning disabilities.

Barbara McIntosh, Co-Director of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities says: “More and more people with learning disabilities are living independently, but still, many do not feel part of their local community. Work can be done with shopkeepers, libraries, leisure centres and employers to develop positive attitudes and a range of skills to make things better. We want to draw on positive things happening elsewhere in the world to give a broader understanding of how to tackle the issue of social inclusion in the UK.”

Building Community Networks: An International Perspective on Best Practice will be held at BMA House in Euston. Places cost between £25 and £140 + VAT. If you are interested in attending, contact Faye Whitnall, Events Co-ordinator at the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, on 020 7803 1142 or fwhitnall@fpld.org.uk
