News Release, 13 February 2006
The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, in partnership with the Association for Real Change (ARC) and Lancaster University, will be holding a series of workshops across England during March and April. The workshops aim to actively support commissioners, service providers and members of Learning Disability Partnership Boards to meet the needs of people with learning disabilities from minority ethnic communities 1.
The workshops have been organised on behalf of the Valuing People Support Team after recent research highlighted that many areas were struggling to provide appropriate services for people from minority ethnic communities . Issues to be discussed include:
- Current good practice
- Legal requirements
- Ways of linking with race equality initiatives
- Person centred approaches
- Ways of working in partnership with the statutory and voluntary sectors.
Hazel Morgan, Co-Director of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, says:
“People with learning disabilities from minority ethnic communities are, too often, marginalized. Delegates to these workshops will have the opportunity to hear about good practice and share ideas about providing appropriate support. We hope this will inspire practical outcomes to improve services.”
Places cost £90 per delegate but are free for people with a learning disability and their supporters. The dates for each workshop are:
- 22nd March - Bristol
- 29th March - Manchester
- 30th March - York
- 4th April - Birmingham
- 6th April – London
To book a place at one of the workshops, please contact Wendy Adamson at ARC on 01246 555043 or email wendy.adamson@arcuk.org.uk
