We know that many young people find it hard to:
- build and maintain social networks
- find a range of opportunities including work.
Even those who attended mainstream school find it hard to move on to paid employment.
We have anecdotal evidence that young people lead more active lives and have a greater community involvement if they have experienced some of the more innovative approaches including:
- person-centred planning
- self-advocacy
- circles of support
- individual budgets such as Direct Payments
We collated evidence from some of the young people who have benefited from the innovative approaches and produced a booklet promoting their experiences called What Kind of a Future?
We then worked with groups of young people to test out these approaches. From our experiences we have developed another booklet called Prepared for the Future? This contains information to prepare families when a young person with a learning disability is leaving school or college.
We have also created a workbook for young people called My Kind of a Future. It is broken into several sections to help young people plan for their own future and decide what's important to them.
