Deciding Together

This project was about finding out how people with learning disabilities can get involved in decisions about their own lives

People with learning disabilities should influence the way services and organisations work

We produced materials as a result of this project

This project included gathering good examples of how people with learning disabilities can get involved in decisions about their own lives.

The project worker gathered good practice examples from across England and was advised by a group that included people with learning disabilities.

The key learning points from this project were put into a practical guide ‘Deciding Together’. This guide includes an audit tool for organisations to review their current practice, together with many practical examples. It outlines 6 building blocks for good involvement:

  • leadership

  • communication

  • independent advocacy

  • changing organisational practice

  • staff development and support

  • partnership

We are currently supporting some organisations to use these materials to improve the ways they involve people.
